GET TO KNOW US

Directly below Oslo Concert Hall, you will find a concert stage, event space, and a number of creative companies under one roof!

The house contributes to a varied cultural program in our part of the city. Together with Oslo Concert Hall and new projects in the area, Vika is a vibrant and creative meeting point in Oslo.

Munkedamsveien 15 has housed several cultural actors over the years. In the 70s and early 80s, the legendary Club 7 was located in the building. A generation of bohemians, liberals and cultural radicals practically lived there. Club 7 was considered "alternative" and contributed with rich and versatile programming. Everything from jazz and folk music to theatre, poetry readings, exhibitions, film screenings and debates - it was an expansion of the understanding of art in the capital.

The year after Club 7 went bankrupt, Sardine's moved in and served as a concert venue and club. The venue was a popular and quality-conscious music venue with several international artists, but also a venue for up-and-coming Norwegian bands.

The Stenersen Museum then took over the operation, and housed three permanent exhibitions by R.E Stenersen, A.Nielsen and L.O Ravensberg, with alternating exhibitions of works by other artists.

Today, the name has been changed to Røverstaden, and the building houses serveral stages, a bar, a gallery and offices for creative actors. The memories of Club 7 and Sardine's are well preserved in the walls and programming, and the house's flexibility creates experiences for a wide audience.

WHERE DOES THE NAME RØVERSTADEN COME FROM?

Røverstaden is a name that has a historical connection to the area. A little higher up in Ruseløkkbakken, a slum area developed in the 19th century, which was seen as the city's worst residential area. Here, lawless conditions prevailed, and the streets were popularly named after the barbary states in North Africa. Three side streets were given the names Algiers, Tripoli, and Tunis. Since the slum was the closest neighbor to the castle, orders were given to demolish the entire area because King Oscar II did not want the slum near him. That is why the majestically Victoria Terrace was built in the 1890s, one of the first buildings in Oslo with running water.

The Vika area around Munkedamsveien 15 was a place where brothels such as "Dueslaget" and "Napoleons Slot" laid side by side with a church, bathhouse, fairground, and theater. The Kristiania bohemians famously wandered the area with people outside the established society of the time.

In the 60s, today's building housed the legendary Club7 and Sardines', and later the Stenersens Museum. The entire house has been completely renovated from top to bottom by Oslo Concert Hall. The concert stage opened its doors in January 2018, while the entire house was completed in March 2018.
